Are you eligible for CLC certification?

Certified Laboratory Consultant (CLC) applicants shall meet ALL of the following eligibility requirements.

Required Documentation

CLC Eligibility

The Certified Laboratory Consultant (CLC) is a medical laboratory expert who provides independent guidance to healthcare facilities. With expertise as a generalist or specialist in specific disciplines, the CLC demonstrates a commitment to quality patient care.

Certification is obtained through a portfolio-based process by submitting the required documentation from ALL designated sections below. 

  • No exam required 

Consulting Experience

Working as a laboratory consultant for at least three (3) years in one of the following types of practices:

  • Independent consultant operating under a formalized business

OR

  • Independent consultant operating without a formalized business

OR

  • internal consultant within a consulting firm, reference laboratory, or medical laboratory under contract or obligation, with consulting as one of the primary responsibilities 

Independent Consultant – Formalized business (business recorded on some form of public record). 

  • Copy of current business license/permit with expiration date and copies of renewal, if applicable
    • The business must have been registered with one of the above entities at least three years prior to the date of submission. 

Independent Consultant – No formalized business  

  • Three (3) signed letters of endorsement from current or past clients on their letterhead, of which one (1) letter verifies services provided at least three years prior to your submission. 

Internal Consultant – within a consulting firm, reference laboratory, or medical laboratory  

  • Employer’s official job description indicating consulting duties (i.e., with home care patients; with the Pediatric Service for POCT; with affiliated physicians for their POLs, etc.).
    • The official job description must either be signed by the employer (HR or immediate supervisor) or accompanied by a signed letter from the employer on company letterhead.
  • Your CV or other authenticated document listing dates and places of consulting employment covering the requisite timeframe (3 out of the last 5 years) 

Education

Bachelor’s degree or higher in science or an allied health field.

  • Copy of your college transcripts showing completion of a baccalaureate degree or higher in science or an allied health field 

Degrees from Foreign Institutions: 

  • Evaluation report of foreign transcript. The evaluation must be a course-by-course evaluation by one of the evaluation services listed on our website. List of evaluation services 

Professional Certifications

Current professional certification or license in a clinical laboratory field / discipline through a nationally-recognized agency.  

  • Proof of valid certification or licensure.

Laboratory-Related Experience

Six (6) years of relevant clinical laboratory experience.

  • Your detailed resume/CV demonstrating 6 years of relevant clinical experience indicating dates and places of employment as proof of experience.
    • Relevant clinical experience must be in a laboratory that performs the chemical, physical, or biological examination of human fluids and tissues and that uses clinical laboratory techniques and methodologies. 

Continuing Education

Thirty (30) clock hours of laboratory medicine or business-related continuing education credit within the last 3 years.

  • Proof of your CE activities (certificates of completion, proof of presentations or books authored, organizational participation, etc.)

Professional Development

Demonstration of professional development through at least one of the following within the past four (4) years):  

  • Active and current membership in two or more professional or business organizations  

OR 

  • The development and utilization of resource materials for consulting practice, including books, periodicals, audio and video materials, newsletters, and government publications. 

Active Membership: 

  • Proof of current (active) membership in one or more professional societies. 

Development and Utilization of Consulting Resource Materials: 

  • Provide resource material references used in consulting practice (books, periodicals, audio and videotapes, newsletters, government publications, and all other resources).
